Stryker's Guide to IRC for Noobs
Version Beta 3 This is a guide to connecting to IRC for noobs I created, it's a really easy simple guide with lots of screenshots. First, sign up on GameSurge.net to get a GameSurge account. Go to: http://gamesurge.net/createaccount/ Your account name will not be your nickname, it is only used to login to your account, so make it something you can remember. Fill out the information and click 'Create'. Check your email, it will contain your password. Make sure you hold on to this information. mIRC is the most popular IRC client and it's free. You can download mIRC by clicking the link below: http://mirc.com/get.html Install mIRC. Launch mIRC. An about mIRC dialog box will popup, stating you only have 30 days to try evaluate it. Don't worry, even after 30 days, it will still continue to let you use it. Click Continue. Step 1: Fill out the info on connect options. You do not really have to put your full name, an alias will suffice. A real email is also not necessary, you can put email there. Your nickname is what you will show up in IRC as, so keep this the alias you want. Alternative is what you will be if your nickname is in use. ![]() Next, go to servers. Step 2: Scroll down until you see the GameSurge folder. Double click to expand it, click Random server (to highlight it), then click the 'Select' button. ![]() Next, go to Options. Make sure connect on startup is checked, reconnect on disconnection is checked, uncheck Pop up connect dialog on startup (it's annoying), and the rest you can leave at default. Step 3: Click the perform button. Check the box at the top that says 'Enable perform on connect'. In the 'Perform commands' box, everything you put here are commands that will automatically be executed when you connect to an IRC network (such as GameSurge). Here you will want to put the command to login to your Gamesurge account. In your email from GameSurge, it should have given you a command like this: /authserv auth YourAccount password Put that in your perform (with your info, of course). Also, put this command in to mask your IP: //mode $me +x (Yes, it has two slashes). Your perform should look similar to this: ![]() Step 4: In the categories on the left, expand 'Display', and click 'Options'. On the right, you should see buttons, click the 'Tray' Button. Make sure 'Always show mIRC icon in tray' is checked. I would make sure 'On startup minimize mIRC to tray' is not checked. Check 'Place mIRC in tray when minimized' if it is not already. Uncheck 'Animate icon when there is activity' (there is almost always activity in mIRC, so having it animate is just annoying. Uncheck 'Single click on tray icon to open' (making it so you have to double click the icon to open). These are perference, feel free to change it to your liking. Click 'OK'. Step 5: Click 'OK' on the mIRC options button (this should exit the options dialog box, and only show mIRC now). Now click the lightening bolt button in the top left corner of mIRC. This is the connect button. You should now be connecting to irc.gamesurge.net. At the top of the status window, it should say you're connnected to GameSurge. If it says another server for some reason, type this command in the status window: /server irc.us.gamesurge.net And hit enter. You should look like this: ![]() Step 6: The mIRC favorites should have popped up. You won't need this. Uncheck both boxes at the bottom, and click 'OK'. So you're on GameSurge, now what? Well now your connected to a chat network with thousands of competitive gamers, the majority of them being Counter-Strike and Counter-Strike: Source players. The status window in mIRC is similar to the console in CS:S. You can type commands into it, such as the command to join a channel. Channels in IRC are basically like different chatrooms. Each team in CS:S can have their own channel, as well as channels for many other things like communities, games, server websites, etc. All channels begin with a # sign, for example '#socal'. To join a channel, type the following command: /j #channelname Try: /j #SourceScrim This should bring you into the SourceScrim IRC channel. In this channel, you will see players and teams looking for other teams to scrim against. Scrims are just practice matches, and do not count for anything. A basic scrim line may look like this: To PM (private message), just double click on the name of the person who spammed the message. You don't have to go all the way to the right and look for it, just click it right on the spam. This will open up a new query window, and you can chat with him/her. Useful Channels #SourceScrim #SourceRinger #Sourceinvite inviteonly #netcode ^ If you want to get ahold of me or the illuminati. To get into SourceInvite just type '/j #SourceInvite inviteonly' (inviteonly is the key (password)). #SourceInvite is basically a big CS:S channel where players from all levels idle, from CEVO-a to ESEA-i. Here you can find ringers, find scrims, recruit, etc. Generally, the scrims in #SourceInvite are going to tend to be higher calibur then the ones you get from #SourceScrim. If you want to create your own channel, such as if you're starting a team, first join the channel and make sure it is not taken yet (meaning nobody is in it and there is no @ChanServ in the channel. If you're in it first, and opped (meaning you have an @sign in front of your name, you can go to this website and register the channel: http://gamesurge.net/utils/chanreg2/ That's it for now! Stay tuned for updates. Any questions, please ask in this thread. Last edited by Stryker; 07-01-2010 at 11:42 PM. |
