    Default Framerate issues

    Im having some "framerate/performance" issues.

So, I play counter-strike:source. And the closer i get to 100fps, it lags. Whenever I get less than 300fps, its lagging. Its the same for cs 1.6 (100fps = lag)
I've got "fps_max" set to "999", cause I cant lock it to 120, which is what i want, since Im using a120hz monitor.

Recently downgraded from Windows7 64-bit to XP-64, to see if this was the issue, that didnt work.

I really have no clue how to fix this, what I can say is that its really annoying me... So I was hoping any of you could have a clue to what the problem is.

( Had the same issue on my old pc aswell )

    New hardware:
    [GFX-CARD] nvidia gtx560 1gb
    [MEMORY] 8gb ddr3
    [CPU] intel i5 2500 3.30 ghz
    [MONITOR] benq xl2410t 120hz

Make sure you get back on W7 64bit first of all, secondly you don't want to cap your fps, it really won't benefit you. Finally, going to need some more details on when or what you're doing when the lag happens.

If I dont cap it, and connect to a serv, its getting forced to 60fps for some reason :S

Anyways, on to the real problem...

The fps drops, like css do, when stuff happens, on pushes, when alot is going on. And when i play dm, it drops to like 250-350.

It doesnt necessarily need any action, for it to lag. F-ex: I can cap my fps to 120, create a server, no bots..no nothing...and it will stutter when I walk around etc....I can also notice alot of flickering when this "lag" comes. It's lagging constantly under 300 fps

EDIT: Forgot to add that it basically feels like the fps is at 40-60, when its really 120-350ish...

Turn off vsync, in game and in your driver settings. Then don't cap your fps.

cl_smooth 0 or cl_smoothtime .05 and cl_smooth 1. make sure your monitor is running 120hz and all other setting are in appropriate parameters

have you given any thought to changing the number of pre-rendered frames? the setting should be in your drivers.

    snd_mixahead "0.05"
    mat_queue_mode "-2"
    fps_max "201"

put them at the bottom of your autoexec.cfg, tell me if that fixes your issues.
